Where Actions are Being Taken California - Two planning meetings were held with representatives of agriculture and conservation groups and state and federal farm agencies in 2000 to discuss pilot projects to test the Farmland Stewardship concept in California. Currently, the California Wilderness Coalition is pursuing a grant to promote new models for the delivery of habitat stewardship projects in California. The Farmland Stewardship Agreement concept will be a major part of these projects (regardless of what eventually comes out of the farm bill). The Farmland Stewardship Program also is being used to address conflicts in the Klamath Basin of Oregon and California (click here for details). Florida - The Farmland Stewardship concept originated during meetings with landowners in 1993 (see history). State legislation based on the Farmland Stewardship Program is now being implemented (click here for details). Georgia - Federal farm bill legislation to establish the Farmland Stewardship Program has been strongly supported by the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District, which hopes to use the program to expand conservation opportunities for Georgia producers. Minnesota - The Farmland Stewardship concept has been implemented in principle by Prairie Land Management, Inc. (click here for details). It also is included as part of the Farmland Stewardship Initiative (click here for details) Missouri - State conservation officers have been using several approaches over the past few years to combine together different programs to better meet conservation needs and opportunities on individual parcels of property. They have been rewarded for their efforts by increased program efficiency and better on-the-ground results. The Farmland Stewardship Program will compliment their efforts and provide additional resources to facilitate program assembly. North Dakota & South Dakota - Included as part of the Farmland Stewardship Initiative (click here for details) Oregon - State legislation is being implemented to create a planning committee charged with developing a state-level stewardship agreement for blending together multiple conservation programs, based on Farmland Stewardship Program concept (click here for details). The Farmland Stewardship Program also is being used to address conflicts in the Klamath Basin of California and Oregon (click here for details). Texas - The Farmland Stewardship Program is completely consistent with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Landowner Incentives Program, held up as a model for private stewardship incentives by George W. Bush -- both during his campaign for President and in his first year in office. (For details, click on Texas Landowner Incentives Program and President George W. Bush's "Plan for Building Conservation Partnerships" and Secretary Norton's Remarks, March 19, 2001, North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference) Wisconsin - Consistent with complementary state program (click here for details). Canada Alberta - Consistent with efforts being pursued by the Land Stewardship Resource Centre (click here for details). Manitoba - Included as part of the Farmland Stewardship Initiative (click here for details) For further information on the Farmland Stewardship Program, follow the links below. |
